CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

SEPTEMBER 8

BETWEEN HILL CITY AND AITKIN, MINNESOTA

AFTERNOON

Shannon and Kevin reached the stream to collect water for everyone. Shannon was nervous, as she felt the others were catching on to their little secret.

“Kevin, do you think they know?” Shannon asked.

“Who cares if they do? Personally, I’m tired of hiding the truth,” Kevin responded.

“Me too, but they might think it’s weird,” Shannon said.

“Well, actually, it is,” Kevin said, as he leaned over to the stream, putting one end of the pump into the water. “Mary and Jason have been together since high school, married for how many years? Three kids together and now all this. It is weird.”

“Thanks for making me feel better,” Shannon said. She grabbed the second hose from the pump, put it into the first canteen, and started pumping. It was a long process to get all the containers filled, but it was also the surest way to get pure drinking water for everyone.

“Didn’t say it to make you feel bad, it’s just the truth,” Kevin said to her.

“I know. I just don’t want anyone to freak out if we tell them or they find out,” Shannon replied.

“Do you want to tell them?” Kevin asked.

“I don’t know. In some ways, it would be easier,” Shannon said, finishing up the first canteen. She grabbed Jason’s camelback to fill that.

“In some ways it might be harder,” Kevin said, getting the third container ready. “Remember, we wanted to keep it a secret because of the weirdness.”

“But with all that’s gone on, maybe they would be happy, knowing that neither of us would be alone in this,” she replied.

“None of us are alone,” Kevin said.

“You know what I mean. Being alone is one thing, but being ALONE is another. I think they might see it as a good thing that we are together, to face this as one,” she said to Kevin. “Being in love is something that nobody should take for granted, especially now.”

Shannon finished with Jason’s camelback, and Kevin took over from her. “Listen, I know what you’re saying, and I agree, to a point. It might be too much for them to handle, with all that’s happened. Also, I think we should tell them, but not right now. Once we get to the cabin, then we can tell them, ok?”

“Really? We don’t have to hide it anymore? Really?” Shannon asked, excitement flowing out of her.

“Yes, but not ’til we get to the cabin. We all have to be focused on getting there, safely. We can’t afford people’s minds to be off in la-la land,” Kevin said. “I promise, as soon as we get to the cabin, we tell them.”

Shannon dropped everything she was doing, ran to Kevin, and embraced him with a long kiss that signified her feelings for him.

“I love you, Kevin. You have made me so happy.”
